abstract = "In this paper, it was developed a semi-empirical model for
MODIS/Terra to quantify cyanobacteria bloom in Guarapiranga
Reservoir, SP Brazil. Cyanobacteria densities (cel/mL) were
calculated by SABESP (Basic Sanitation for S{\~a}o Paulo State)
from 2 hydrographic stations arranged in the reservoir 2 to 3
times a week, and were freely available from its website. Then,
these densities were related to the daily overpass of the MODIS
sensor. The satellite imagery spans from January to December of
2013. The images were acquired already atmospherically corrected
by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A
band ratio was applied to the second (841-876 nm) and first
(620-670 nm) bands, and a correlation between the bands showed an
indication of phytoplankton bloom. This allowed the model
generation based on the correlation between the in situ cell count
and remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) acquired from the imagery. R2
and equation slope values from collection point 101 showed a
better result than point 104 before calibration and validation.
The values from this point were then calibrated and validated and
a final model generated. The final semi-empirical model R2 was
0.85 and the normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) was 0.24.
This study shows the potential for the MODIS/Terra sensor to be
used in cyanobacteria bloom spatio-temporal monitoring programmes,
therefore, allowing the bloom density quantification and the
comprehension of ecological processes in an inland tropical
reservoir.",
